A Sea of superstitions, myths, and science

Mysteries of the Sea

Between mermaids and sea monsters

The ocean has always been full of mysteries.

In The Mysteries of the Sea, you enter a dark and atmospheric world where mermaids, giant squids, and creatures from the depths emerge.

Some of them are pure fantasy. Others are rooted in real animals, sailors’ experiences, and all the things people couldn’t explain. Here, it’s not always easy to tell where science ends and myth begins.

When Reality Becomes Fantasy

The Mysteries of the Sea aren't just a matter of imagination.

In the exhibition, you’ll also encounter some of the animals and phenomena that have inspired people to wonder, shudder, and write poetry.

See the enormous whale hearts, get up close to the giant squid, and learn how real animals have helped shape tales of monsters, omens, and supernatural powers.

For brave children and curious adults

"Mysteries of the Sea" is for anyone curious about mermaids, sea monsters, and everything else that people throughout history have believed, feared, and told stories about regarding the sea.

For adults, the exhibition is an atmospheric encounter with myths, science, and the ocean’s great stories. For children, it’s a dark and sensory experience with plenty to look for.

The exhibition may be especially exciting for school-age children — and for the little ones who dare to explore the darkness while holding an adult’s hand. Take a good look around and see what mysteries emerge in the dark.
