Denmark's Incredible Fishing Venture
When fishing was a matter of life and death
Life with and against the sea
In Denmark's Incredible Fishing Venture, you'll get a glimpse into a time when fishing was the main industry in Esbjerg.
Here, local fishermen and their families share stories about life at sea, the long trips away from home, and the hunt for their catch. These are stories of hard work, strong communities, and an ocean that both provided a livelihood and put people to the test.
The exhibition tells its story through sound, words, drawings, and portraits that give voice to the fishermen themselves.
Not just the men at sea
Fishing took place at sea, but it also shaped life at home.
When the fishermen were away for weeks on end—sometimes for most of the year—the families had to keep their daily lives running smoothly on land. In the exhibition, you’ll therefore encounter not only stories about storms, fishing boats, and catches, but also about those who stayed behind on the dock and kept the home running.
In this way, the history of fishing also becomes a story about families, longing, responsibility, and an entire local community built around the harbor.
