About the Museum

The Fisheries and Maritime Museum is Denmark’s museum of the sea, and as the only museum in the country, we view the sea through a lens that encompasses both natural history and cultural history. This means we have historical images and artifacts, but also plenty of live animals that you can see in the aquarium and the sealarium. So when you visit us, you’ll get to experience the ocean in a whole new, fun, and unique way.

Mission and Vision

Our Mission
The Fisheries and Maritime Museum is Denmark’s museum of the sea. We conduct research, share knowledge, collect artifacts, and engage with the relationship between humans and the sea. Our specific areas of focus are the economic activities associated with the Danish sea from the 1500s to the present day, and the natural environment of the sea, with a particular focus on the North Sea and the Wadden Sea, as well as marine mammals in Danish waters.

Our Vision
We want to set the agenda for making all of Denmark more knowledgeable about life in, with, and on the sea. With high ambitions for our exhibition, research, and outreach activities, we want to make Esbjerg proud to have a museum in a class of its own that stands out both nationally and internationally. We take pride in our expertise and objectivity, and based on these, we present engaging, vivid, and relevant content about the sea and maritime cultures, always putting our audience at the center.
